What it does
On a growing BuddyPress community, adding each new member to the right groups by hand takes time and is easy to forget. This plugin replaces that manual work with lists. A global list applies to every user, so everyone lands in your core groups. A conditional list applies only to users who match rules you define, such as a user role, a profile field value, a member type or a core WordPress field like the email address.
You choose when users are checked against your lists: at registration, at account activation, when a profile is updated or when a member type changes. Each list can hold any number of groups, and a list can carry several conditions. Existing members are covered too, since you can sync your current user base with your lists in bulk. The plugin requires BuddyPress, works with the BuddyBoss Platform, and its settings sit under the Tools menu in the WordPress admin.
Best for
- BuddyPress community sites with many new registrations
- BuddyBoss sites that sort members by type or role
- Membership communities needing profile-based group placement
Features
Members are added to the BuddyPress groups you pick without any manual assignment, so group membership stays consistent across your community.
Create global lists that apply to every user and conditional lists that apply only to users who meet the rules you set.
Combine rules based on user role, profile data, member type and core WordPress fields such as user email to control exactly who joins which groups.
Decide when users are evaluated: on registration, on account activation, after a profile update or when their member type changes.
Run your lists against members who already have accounts, so established communities get the same group assignments as new signups.
Attach any number of BuddyPress groups to a single list, letting one matching rule place a user into several relevant groups at once.
The plugin works on sites running the BuddyBoss Platform as well as standard BuddyPress installations.

Questions about Auto Join Groups
Can I add every new member to the same set of groups?
Yes. A global list applies to all users, so any groups you attach to it will receive every member. You can create more than one global list if you want to organize your default groups separately.
Can group membership depend on a member's profile?
Yes. Conditional lists let you set rules based on profile field data, member type, user role or core WordPress fields like email. Users who match the conditions are added to the groups on that list.
What happens to members who joined before I set this up?
You can sync existing users with your lists in bulk. The plugin checks your current members against the rules and assigns the matching group memberships, so older accounts are treated the same as new ones.
Does it work with BuddyBoss?
Yes. Auto Join Groups is compatible with the BuddyBoss Platform, so you can use the same global and conditional lists on a BuddyBoss community. On standard sites it requires BuddyPress.
Is Auto Join Groups free?
The code of Auto Join Groups is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
Which version of Auto Join Groups is this?
Version 1.3.0, released Sep 2, 2026. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.
How do I update Auto Join Groups?
Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Auto Join Groups automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
What does Auto Join Groups need?
Auto Join Groups needs BuddyPress installed and active.
