Distance Rate Shipping for WooCommerce
This WooCommerce extension by Automattic sets shipping fees based on how far an order has to travel. It uses the Google Distance Matrix API to work out driving distance or travel time to each customer, then turns that into a delivery charge.

What it does
Flat rates and shipping zones work well for parcels sent across the country, but they fit poorly when you drive orders out yourself. A customer two miles away and one twenty miles away can end up paying the same. This plugin ties the fee to the actual route, so nearby orders cost less to deliver and distant ones cost more. That suits takeaway kitchens, home-cooked meal services, equipment rental shops and other businesses where every extra mile adds real cost.
Setup happens inside the WooCommerce shipping settings, and you need a Google account with API access. The plugin sends the customer's address to Google's routing service, gets back the driving distance and travel time, and applies your rules. You can price by distance, by time, or add extra charges based on cart weight, cart value or the number of items. It requires WooCommerce and supports High Performance Order Storage (HPOS).
Best for
- Restaurants and takeaways delivering food locally
- Equipment rental businesses that drop off and collect gear
- WooCommerce stores running their own delivery vehicles
Features
Calculates shipping rates from the driving distance between your location and the customer's address, using live routing data from the Google Distance Matrix API.
Charges based on total travel time instead of miles, which helps when the length of a delivery run matters more than the distance covered.
Adds extra charges according to the total weight of the cart, so heavier orders can carry a higher delivery fee on top of the distance rate.
Adjusts the shipping cost based on the cart total or the number of items, giving you more ways to shape the final fee.
Organizes your pricing conditions in a rules table within the shipping method settings, with tooltips in the header explaining each column.
Works with WooCommerce High Performance Order Storage, so you can use the newer order storage system without losing distance-based shipping.
Configured through the familiar WooCommerce shipping interface, needing only a Google account with API access to connect the distance calculations.

Questions about Distance Rate Shipping for WooCommerce
How does the plugin know how far away a customer is?
It connects to the Google Distance Matrix API, which returns the driving distance and travel time between your location and the customer's address. The plugin then uses those figures to calculate the shipping fee according to the rules you set.
Do I need a Google account to use it?
Yes. The plugin relies on Google Maps routing data, so you need a Google account with API access. Once that is connected in the WooCommerce settings, distances and travel times are calculated automatically for each order.
Can I charge more for heavy or large orders as well?
Yes. Alongside distance or travel time, you can add extra charges based on total cart weight, cart value or the number of items in the cart. This lets one shipping method account for both how far an order goes and what it contains.
Does it work with WooCommerce HPOS?
Yes, it supports WooCommerce High Performance Order Storage. It also requires WooCommerce itself, since it runs as a shipping method inside the WooCommerce shipping settings.
Is Distance Rate Shipping for WooCommerce free?
The code of Distance Rate Shipping for WooCommerce is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
