What it does

Stores that sell to nonprofits, government agencies or other businesses often need to drop sales tax for some buyers and keep it for everyone else. Doing that by hand means chasing certificates, editing orders and tracking who is still eligible. This plugin moves that work into your WooCommerce dashboard. Customers submit their tax details through a form on the My Account page, and you approve or reject each request from the back office, with optional expiry dates so approvals do not stay open forever.

You can also skip the paperwork for trusted customers by granting exemption directly to selected users or whole user roles. At checkout, tax can be removed automatically for approved customers, or you can show a checkbox so buyers claim the exemption themselves. Guests can claim it too through customizable prompts. Exemption status appears on both customer and admin order pages, email notifications keep everyone informed, and the plugin works with WooCommerce Cart and Checkout Blocks and has partial compatibility with AvaTax.

Best for

  • WooCommerce stores selling to nonprofits or government buyers
  • B2B shops with tax-exempt wholesale customers
  • Store admins who need documented exemption approvals

Features

Role-based eligibility

Allow all user roles or only selected ones to claim tax exemption, so you decide exactly which customer groups qualify for tax relief.

My Account exemption form

A customizable form on the My Account page lets customers submit their tax certificates and the details you ask for.

Admin approval and rejection

Review each tax exemption request in the back office and approve or reject it, keeping a clear record of who has been granted exemption.

Automatic or checkbox checkout

Remove tax automatically for approved customers, or show a checkbox at checkout so eligible buyers can claim the exemption themselves.

Expiry dates for approvals

Set an expiry date on each approval so exemptions lapse on schedule and you can track when customers need to renew.

Guest checkout claims

Guest users can claim tax exemption during checkout through customizable prompts, without having to create an account first.

Direct exemption without documents

Grant tax exemption straight to selected customers or user roles when no submitted documentation is needed for trusted buyers.

Customizable email notifications

Send admins and customers emails about form submissions, approvals, rejections and expirations, with message content you can adjust.

Questions about Tax Exempt

Do customers have to upload a certificate to get tax exemption?

Not necessarily. You can require customers to submit documents through the My Account form for review, or you can grant exemption directly to selected customers or user roles without any submission. Many stores use both, depending on how well they know the buyer.

Can guest shoppers claim tax exemption?

Yes. Guest users can claim tax exemption during checkout through customizable prompts, so they do not need to create an account first. This is useful if some of your exempt buyers place one-off orders.

Does it work with the WooCommerce block checkout?

Yes. The plugin supports WooCommerce Cart and Checkout Blocks. It also has partial compatibility with AvaTax, so check that your specific AvaTax setup behaves as expected before relying on it. It requires WooCommerce to run.

How do I keep track of which exemptions are still valid?

You can set expiry dates on exemption approvals, and email notifications can alert admins and customers when an exemption expires. Exemption status is also shown on customer and admin order pages for quick reference.

Is Tax Exempt free?

The code of Tax Exempt is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of Tax Exempt is this?

Version 1.9.4, released Jul 18, 2026. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update Tax Exempt?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Tax Exempt automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.

What does Tax Exempt need?

Tax Exempt needs WooCommerce installed and active.
