What it does

Social sites built on BuddyPress give members many ways to reach each other, and sometimes that contact is unwanted. Without a block option, members have to ask admins for help every time someone bothers them. This plugin gives members a way to handle it themselves. Once one member blocks another, the pair can no longer message each other, send friend requests or mention each other in activity, and any existing friendship or follow between them is removed automatically.

Site owners stay in control of how blocking works. You choose which user roles are allowed to block, and you can whitelist roles, such as administrators or moderators, so they can never be blocked. Blockers can optionally give a reason, and admins can receive notifications when someone blocks or unblocks another member. Blocked users can also be hidden from member listings, activity feeds and comments, and members can restrict their profiles from people they have blocked. A REST API lets developers bring blocking into custom apps or workflows.

Best for

  • BuddyPress social networks that need member-level blocking
  • Community sites dealing with harassment or unwanted messages
  • Developers building apps on top of BuddyPress communities

Features

Role-based blocking permissions

Decide which user roles are allowed to block other members, so blocking is available only to the groups you trust with it.

Role whitelisting

Protect selected roles, such as administrators, from being blocked so staff and other important accounts can always reach members.

Automatic unfriending and unfollowing

When a block happens, any friendship or follow between the two members is removed automatically, with no extra steps for either person.

Message and friend request limits

Blocked pairs cannot send each other private messages or friendship requests, which closes the most direct routes for unwanted contact.

Mention and activity filtering

Activity mentions between blocked users are stopped, and their activity posts and comments are hidden from each other in the feed.

Profile and listing privacy

Members can keep their profiles from being viewed by people they blocked, and blocked users can be hidden from each other in member listings.

Block reasons and admin alerts

Blockers can optionally add a reason, and admins can choose to get notifications whenever members block or unblock someone.

REST API endpoints

Developers can use the REST API to connect blocking features to custom workflows or app environments built around the community.

Questions about BuddyPress Block Users

Does this plugin work without BuddyPress?

No. It is built specifically for BuddyPress communities and requires BuddyPress to be active. All of its blocking features, such as message, friend request and activity restrictions, work through BuddyPress.

What happens when one member blocks another?

The two members can no longer send each other private messages or friend requests, and activity mentions between them are stopped. Any friendship or follow is removed automatically. Depending on your settings, they can also be hidden from each other in member listings, activity feeds, comments and profile views.

Can I stop members from blocking admins or moderators?

Yes. Role-based whitelisting lets you choose roles that cannot be blocked, so accounts like administrators stay reachable. You can also limit which roles are allowed to block others in the first place.

Will I know when members block each other?

You can turn on optional admin notifications that alert you when users block or unblock others. Blockers can also be asked for an optional reason, which gives moderators more context about what happened.

Is BuddyPress Block Users free?

The code of BuddyPress Block Users is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of BuddyPress Block Users is this?

Version 1.2.3, released Oct 13, 2025. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update BuddyPress Block Users?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of BuddyPress Block Users automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.

What does BuddyPress Block Users need?

BuddyPress Block Users needs BuddyPress installed and active.
