  • ImprovedScan error messages are clearer and suggest using smaller buffers and a delay when the server times out.

What it does

WordPress sites tend to collect media over the years: old images, replaced PDFs, test uploads and files left behind by themes or plugins you no longer run. All of it sits on your server taking up space, and sorting through it by hand is slow and risky because it is hard to tell what is still in use. This plugin does that checking for you, looking through posts, metadata, widgets and other places where media can be referenced, so you get a list of files that appear to be unused.

There are two kinds of scan. The Media Library scan flags library entries that nothing points to, and the filesystem scan compares the files in your uploads folder against your media entries to catch files that were never registered. A live site scan can check your active site for media linked dynamically. Support for popular page builders and complex plugins helps cut down on false positives. Flagged files go to an internal trash first, and developers can run cleanup tasks through WP-CLI.

Best for

  • Bloggers with years of accumulated images and uploads
  • Site owners running low on server storage
  • Developers managing large or multiple WordPress sites

Features

Media Library scan

Detects unused images, PDFs and other files in your WordPress Media Library and highlights them so you can decide what to remove.

Filesystem scan

Matches every file in your uploads folder against your media entries to find unreferenced files that a standard library scan would not pick up.

Live site scan

Analyzes your active website to detect file usage more precisely, catching media that is linked dynamically or through advanced configurations.

Page builder and plugin awareness

Reads custom fields and content structures from popular builders and complex plugins, which helps reduce false positives during a scan.

Internal trash

Deleted files go to a trash area first, giving you a chance to review them and restore anything before it is permanently removed.

Broad reference checking

Looks through posts, metadata, widgets and other areas of your site where media might be referenced, going beyond basic library checks.

WP-CLI commands

Run media cleanup tasks from the command line, which suits developers and people handling large sites or several sites at once.

Timeout handling and buffer settings

The scanner handles server timeouts itself and suggests smaller buffers and a delay, so long scans on slower hosts can still finish.

Questions about Media Cleaner Pro

Will it delete images that my page builder still uses?

The scanner supports popular page builders and complex plugins and analyzes custom fields and content structures to reduce false positives. Files are also moved to an internal trash before permanent deletion, so you can review them and restore anything that turns out to be in use.

Can it find files in my uploads folder that are not in the Media Library?

Yes. The filesystem scan matches every file in your uploads folder against your media entries and flags unreferenced files, including ones that never appeared in the Media Library and would be missed by a library-only scan.

Is it usable for someone who is not technical?

The interface is designed so users of different skill levels can run scans, review results and clean up media. Developers who prefer the command line also have WP-CLI support for automating cleanup tasks.

What happens if my server times out during a big scan?

The scanner handles timeouts itself instead of showing raw errors. Its messages suggest using smaller buffers and adding a delay, and the trash deletion process follows your file buffer setting, which helps on slower or limited hosting.

The code of Media Cleaner Pro is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
