What’s new in Media File Renamer 6.3.3
- NewNew "Sync With Auto Method" option in the Dashboard's Sync Fields, which updates the metadata using the automatic rename method without renaming the file.
- ImprovedThe On Post Save behavior is now part of the regular Renaming Methods, with its own settings.
- FixedCached post IDs were removed to avoid renaming with an outdated attached post title.
What it does
Media libraries tend to fill up with files named IMG_4821.jpg or screenshot-final-2.png, which makes them hard to search and manage. This plugin fixes that by giving each file a name based on its title, ALT text, attached post title or other metadata. It also suggests names using Vision AI, which looks at the image content itself, so you get a sensible starting point even when a file has little information attached.
You choose how much happens on its own. Automatic renaming kicks in when titles are updated, while the Renamer Dashboard and the Media Library let you change names manually. Locking protects files you never want touched, an undo button restores earlier names, and SQL logging records every rename. Transliteration handles other languages and character sets, and developers can adjust behavior with filters, actions and custom triggers.
Best for
- Photographers with large image libraries
- Bloggers who upload many images per post
- Developers building custom media workflows for client sites
Features
Files are renamed whenever their titles are updated, so filenames stay consistent with your content without you having to go back and fix them one by one.
Edit filenames from the Media Library, individual edit screens or the dedicated Renamer Dashboard when you want direct control over what each file is called.
Vision AI analyzes image content and metadata to recommend relevant filenames, which helps when files were uploaded with meaningless camera or screenshot names.
Lock filenames on files that must not change, and use the undo button to revert a file to its previous name in a single click.
Base automatic names on ALT text or attached post titles, or use anonymization options when you prefer filenames that reveal nothing about the content.
Numbers are appended and incremented automatically when two files would share a name, preventing conflicts and overwrites in your media library.
Filenames can sync with ALT text and media titles, and detailed SQL logging keeps a history of rename operations for auditing and rollback.
Transliteration supports multiple languages and character encodings, while filters, actions and custom triggers let developers build renaming into their own workflows.

Questions about Media File Renamer
Can it rename files automatically without me doing anything?
Yes. Automatic renaming updates a file's name whenever its title changes. You can also base automatic names on other sources, such as ALT text or the title of the post the file is attached to.
What if I rename a file by mistake?
An undo button lets you revert a file to its previous name with one click. SQL logging also keeps a record of rename operations, and you can lock important files so their names cannot be changed.
Does it work with filenames in other languages?
The plugin includes transliteration support for multiple languages and character encodings, which converts characters into filename friendly forms so names stay readable and usable.
Can I update metadata without renaming the file?
Yes. The Dashboard's sync fields include an option to update metadata using the automatic rename method while leaving the filename itself unchanged.
Is Media File Renamer free?
The code of Media File Renamer is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
Which version of Media File Renamer is this?
Version 6.3.3, released Oct 3, 2026. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.
How do I update Media File Renamer?
Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Media File Renamer automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
