What it does
Custom field groups pile up quickly on content-heavy sites, and editors end up scrolling past boxes that have nothing to do with the post in front of them. This extension solves that by displaying a meta box only when it applies. You attach conditions to a meta box, and it appears or disappears depending on the page template, post format, category, custom taxonomy or parent page the editor picks. The result is an editing screen that shows people the fields they actually need.
Visibility changes happen instantly through JavaScript, so a meta box toggles the moment an editor changes a setting, without a page reload. Conditions can be combined with AND and OR logic for finer control, and they can respond to input values such as a dropdown choice or a checkbox state. You add conditions to existing meta boxes without rewriting their definitions. It requires Meta Box and works in both the Classic Editor and the Gutenberg block editor.
Best for
- Developers building custom fields with Meta Box
- Agencies handing tidy editing screens to clients
- Sites with many templates, taxonomies or content types
Features
Meta boxes show or hide right away when an editor changes a relevant setting, with no need to refresh or reload the page.
Conditions work in both the Classic Editor and the Gutenberg block editor, so the same rules apply whichever editing screen your team uses.
Display a meta box only for certain page templates or post formats, keeping unrelated fields off the screen for other content.
Show or hide meta boxes based on categories or custom taxonomies, including hierarchical taxonomies, to match how your content is organized.
Toggle meta boxes according to parent page relationships, which helps on sites with layered page structures and sections.
Make a meta box depend on what an editor selects in another field, such as a dropdown option or whether a checkbox is ticked.
Combine several conditions with logical operators to define exactly when a meta box should appear, from simple rules to detailed ones.
Add visibility conditions to your existing meta boxes without rewriting their definitions or writing extra custom PHP code.

Questions about MB Show Hide
Does this work on its own or do I need another plugin?
It is an extension for Meta Box, so you need the Meta Box plugin installed. The extension adds visibility conditions to the meta boxes you create with it, controlling when each one appears in the editor.
Will it work with the Gutenberg block editor?
Yes. The extension supports both the Gutenberg block editor and the Classic Editor, so your show and hide rules behave the same way regardless of which editing screen is in use.
Can a meta box react to what an editor picks in another field?
Yes. Input value conditions let a meta box appear or disappear based on user selections such as a dropdown choice or a checkbox state. The change happens instantly through JavaScript without reloading the page.
Do I have to rebuild my existing meta boxes to use it?
No. You add conditions to your current meta boxes without rewriting their definitions. You can set rules by page template, post format, category, custom taxonomy, parent page or input value, and combine them with AND or OR logic.
