What’s new in Comet Cache Pro 170220

Version 170220 Latest
  • NewNew Feature: Comet Cache can now be configured to automatically clear the cache for date-based archive views whenever any single post is cleared due to changes in content, title, etc. See: Dashboard → Comet Cache → Plugin Options → Automatic Cache Clearing → Auto-Clear "Date-Based Archives" Too?. See also: Issue #724.
  • NewNew Pro Feature: Apache Optimizations now include a new option that allows site owners to enforce an exact host name for all requests. See: Dashboard → Comet Cache Pro → Plugin Options → Apache Optimizations → Enforce an Exact Host Name?. See also: Issue #101.
  • FixedApache detection sometimes inaccurate. So instead of using default WP core globals for server detection, Comet Cache now uses it's own set of Apache/Nginx/IIS detection functions. And, this release enhances our Apache and Nginx detection routines; making them smart enough to catch additional edge cases; i.e., to further reduce the likelihood of there being a false-positive. See Issue #748.
  • FixedSome XML-RPC and REST API requests were being cached inadvertently. See Issue #855.
  • FixedBroken textarea field due to `white-space:nowrap` in Firefox. See Issue #866.
  • FixedThis release resolves empty directories being left in the cache folder, in some scenarios. See Thread #866.
  • FixedBug Fix (Pro): Some REST requests were being redirected incorrectly whenever Apache Optimizations were enabled. See Issue #855.
  • FixedCompatibility Bug Fix: Some Jetpack API calls were being cached inadvertently. See Issue #855.

What it does

Every time WordPress builds a page, it runs PHP and queries the database. On a busy site that adds up and puts real strain on the server. This plugin stores a finished static version of each page, post, category and tag, then hands that file to the next visitor instead of rebuilding it. Setup is short and well documented, so you can turn caching on without much technical background and adjust the finer options later as needed.

The plugin watches for changes to posts, pages, themes, tags and users, and clears only the cache files affected. It can also clear date-based archive views when a single post is updated. You can set expiration times, exclude specific URIs or user agents, cache feeds and 404 pages, and compress HTML output. For larger setups it adds CDN support, caching for logged-in users, and Apache options such as enforcing an exact host name.

Best for

  • Blogs and content sites with frequent traffic
  • Membership and community sites with many logged-in users
  • Freelancers and agencies managing several WordPress sites

Features

Full page caching

Caches entire pages, posts, categories and tags as static copies, so repeat requests are served without WordPress rebuilding each page from scratch.

Automatic cache clearing

Monitors changes to posts, pages, themes, tags and users, then clears only the related cache files. It can also clear date-based archives when a post changes.

Browser caching

Lets visitors' browsers store content locally, so returning visitors can load pages without sending every request back to your server.

Feed and 404 caching

Caches RSS, RDF and Atom feeds for feed readers, and caches Not Found pages to cut server work caused by bots hitting invalid URLs.

Custom expiration and exclusions

Set cache expiration times to match how often you publish, and add exclusion patterns for URIs and user agents to avoid conflicts with themes, plugins or mobile devices.

CDN support

Works with content delivery networks so your cached content can be distributed and served from locations closer to your visitors.

Logged-in user caching

Caches content for registered and logged-in users, which is useful for membership sites and community platforms where many visitors are signed in.

Clear cache button and compression

An AJAX button clears the cache on demand without a full page reload, and HTML compression shrinks the size of cached pages.

Questions about Comet Cache Pro

Will visitors see outdated content after I update a post?

The plugin tracks changes to posts, pages, themes, tags and users and clears the affected cache files automatically. You can also have it clear date-based archive views when a post changes, set expiration times, or clear everything manually with the AJAX button.

Can it cache pages for users who are logged in?

Yes. Logged-in user caching is included, so registered members get cached pages too. This suits membership sites and community platforms where a large share of visitors are signed in.

What if a certain page or device should not be cached?

You can set exclusion patterns based on URIs and user agents. That lets you keep specific pages or browsers out of the cache, which helps avoid compatibility issues with certain themes, plugins or mobile devices.

Does it work with a CDN?

Yes. Comet Cache Pro includes CDN support, so cached content can be delivered through a content delivery network alongside your server's own static page cache.

Is Comet Cache Pro free?

The code of Comet Cache Pro is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of Comet Cache Pro is this?

Version 170220, released Mar 24, 2020. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update Comet Cache Pro?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Comet Cache Pro automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
