What it does
Many digital sellers want to hand out samples, freebies or promotional items next to their paid products. Without a dedicated tool, a free product in Easy Digital Downloads still goes through the regular cart and checkout, which adds steps for the visitor. This plugin gives free products their own delivery path, so a visitor can grab a free file through a modal window and get it without the extra friction of a full purchase.
The plugin works inside your existing Easy Digital Downloads setup and applies to the products you mark as free, including free variations of a product. It handles logged in users and new visitors, and new users can be logged in automatically after they verify their free download. Files stored remotely, such as on S3 or Dropbox, are supported, and cache file protection follows the same approach as Easy Digital Downloads itself. Reporting lets you see how your free downloads are performing.

Questions about EDD - Free Downloads
Do I need Easy Digital Downloads to use this plugin?
Yes. This plugin extends Easy Digital Downloads and works inside a store built with it. It adds a free download process for the products you choose to offer at no cost, alongside your regular paid catalog.
Can visitors get a free file without going through the full checkout?
Free products are claimed through a modal window and delivered automatically. Logged in users get a version of the modal suited to them, and newly created users can be logged in automatically after verifying their free download.
Will it work with files I store on S3 or Dropbox?
Yes. The plugin includes compatibility with remote file handling for S3 and Dropbox, so freebies hosted on those services can be delivered through the same free download process as locally stored files.
Can I make only one variation of a product free?
Yes. Free variations of a product are supported, and the plugin links the customer to the correct variation, so someone claiming the free option receives that specific file and nothing else.
Is EDD - Free Downloads free?
The code of EDD - Free Downloads is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
