What’s new in Hreflang Flags 1.10

Version 1.10 · May 2, 2023 Latest

What it does

Sites that serve several languages or regions often have hreflang tags in place for search engines, but visitors still need a clear way to switch between versions. Adding flag links by hand to every page gets tedious and falls out of sync as content changes. This plugin works from your existing hreflang implementation, finds the alternate versions of each page and generates matching flag links automatically, so the visible language options follow the same relationships your tags already describe.

Once configured, the flags appear wherever you choose to place them. You can pin them to the top, right, bottom or left edge of the screen, put them inside post content, drop them into widget areas or add them directly to theme template files. The flag set covers more than 2400 country flags based on ISO-3166-1 alpha-2 codes, in five sizes and two styles, and the plugin also works on WordPress multisite networks.

Best for

  • Multilingual WordPress sites already using hreflang tags
  • Businesses running separate regional versions of their pages
  • Agencies managing language sites on a multisite network

Features

Automatic hreflang detection

Reads the hreflang tags already on your pages and creates the matching flag links, so you do not have to add or update flags manually.

Large flag library

Includes more than 2400 country flags that follow the ISO-3166-1 alpha-2 standard for country codes.

Five flag sizes

Choose flags at 16, 24, 32, 48 or 64 pixels to fit a compact header, a sidebar or a more visible spot.

Shiny and flat styles

Pick between a shiny or a flat flag style so the switcher matches the look of your theme.

Fixed screen positions

Pin the flags to the top, right, bottom or left edge of the screen so they stay visible as visitors scroll.

Posts, widgets and templates

Place flags inside post content, in widget areas or directly in theme template files, depending on how your site is built.

Multisite support

Works with WordPress multisite installations, letting you offer the same kind of language switching across sites in a network.

Questions about Hreflang Flags

Do I need hreflang tags set up before using this?

Yes. The plugin works by detecting your existing hreflang implementation and generating flags from the alternate page versions it finds. If your pages do not have hreflang tags, there are no alternate versions for it to link.

Where can the flags appear on my site?

You can fix them to the top, right, bottom or left edge of the screen, place them inside post content, add them to widget areas or embed them in your theme template files.

Can I change how the flags look?

You can choose from five sizes (16, 24, 32, 48 and 64 pixels) and two styles, shiny and flat. The library covers more than 2400 country flags based on ISO-3166-1 alpha-2 codes.

Will it work on a WordPress multisite network?

Yes. The plugin supports WordPress multisite installations, so you can use consistent flag-based language switching across multiple sites in the same network.

Is Hreflang Flags free?

The code of Hreflang Flags is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of Hreflang Flags is this?

Version 1.10, released May 2, 2023. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update Hreflang Flags?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Hreflang Flags automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
