What it does
Out of the box, order references in a digital store may not follow the pattern your accounting or customer service team expects. EDD - Advanced Sequential Order Numbers gives every order a unique number that follows a sequence you define. Customers see that reference on their receipts and emails, so when someone writes in about a purchase, both sides are looking at the same easy-to-read number.
The plugin works inside Easy Digital Downloads with no coding needed, and its settings sit under the Payments tab. Beyond the basic format, it handles less obvious cases: temporary numbers for orders that are still pending or abandoned, a separate sequence for free orders, and correct numbering for subscription renewal payments. It also supports multisite installations and high-volume digital stores.
Best for
- Easy Digital Downloads stores selling software or digital files
- Shops needing tidy order numbers for accounting
- Agencies running Easy Digital Downloads on multisite networks
Features
Orders receive unique numbers that follow a clear sequence, so you can track purchases in order and spot each one quickly in reports and records.
Add text before or after the number and pad it with leading zeros, giving order references a consistent, branded format that matches your business style.
Restart the order count daily, monthly or yearly, which helps when you organize records by period for accounting or reporting.
Incomplete and abandoned orders get a temporary number, and recovered or completed orders then receive their proper sequential number.
Free orders can use their own number sequence, keeping them apart from paid purchases, while subscription renewal payments are assigned numbers from the correct sequence.
Purchase receipts and emails show the finished order number, giving customers a reference they can quote when they contact you.
The plugin is compatible with WordPress multisite installations and is built to handle high-volume digital stores.
Questions about EDD - Advanced Sequential Order Numbers
Does this work with Easy Digital Downloads only?
Yes. It is built specifically for Easy Digital Downloads and replaces that plugin's default order numbering. Its settings appear in the Payments tab of the Easy Digital Downloads settings, and you do not need any coding knowledge to configure the number format.
Can I restart order numbers each year?
You can. The plugin lets you reset the order number sequence daily, monthly or yearly. Combined with a prefix such as a year or store code, this makes it easy to group orders by period for bookkeeping.
How are free orders and subscription renewals numbered?
Free orders can be given their own separate number sequence. Subscription renewal payments are assigned numbers from the regular sequence rather than the free one, so paid renewals stay in line with your other paid orders.
What happens to abandoned or pending orders?
Orders that are not yet complete, including abandoned ones, receive a temporary order number. If an abandoned order is later recovered and completed, it is assigned a proper number, and receipt emails use the completed number.
