What it does

A directory site built with GeoDirectory handles listings and reviews well, while BuddyPress handles member profiles, groups and messaging. Running both side by side can leave users with two separate experiences. This plugin joins them. New directory users sign up through BuddyPress registration forms, and the content they submit to the directory appears in their BuddyPress profile and in activity streams. The result is a review and listings site with a social layer, similar in concept to sites like Yelp or TripAdvisor.

The add-on sits on top of GeoDirectory and works alongside BuddyPress, so you need both in place. Once connected, member profiles gain tabs for submitted listings, reviews and favorite listings, giving each person a public record of what they have contributed. Combined with BuddyPress features such as groups, private messaging and activity updates, your directory can support a community built around a location, a hobby or a type of business, where members talk about the listings they share an interest in.

Best for

  • Local business directories with an active member community
  • Interest-based directories built around hobbies or activities
  • Review sites that want member profiles and social feeds

Features

BuddyPress registration for users

New directory users are added through BuddyPress registration forms, so your community has one sign-up process instead of separate forms for the directory and the social network.

Listings in activity streams

When members submit listings to your directory, those listings show up in BuddyPress activity feeds where other members can see them.

Reviews in activity streams

User reviews of directory listings are posted to BuddyPress activity feeds, putting fresh review content in front of the wider community.

Listings tab on profiles

BuddyPress member profiles get a tab that displays the listings each member has submitted to the directory.

Reviews tab on profiles

A reviews tab on each BuddyPress profile collects the reviews that member has written, so visitors can see their opinions in one spot.

Favorites tab on profiles

Members can display their favorite listings on a dedicated profile tab, giving others a view of the places and businesses they like.

Works with BuddyPress social tools

Directory content sits alongside BuddyPress groups, private messaging and activity updates, letting you run a social network centered on your listings.

Questions about GeoDirectory Buddypress

What do I need to run this plugin?

It is an add-on for GeoDirectory, so the GeoDirectory plugin must be active on your site. You also need BuddyPress, since the plugin connects your directory listings, reviews and registration to BuddyPress profiles and activity streams.

What appears on a member's BuddyPress profile?

Profiles gain tabs for the listings the member has submitted, the reviews they have written and the listings they have marked as favorites. This gives each member a visible record of their directory activity that other users can browse.

Will directory activity show up in the BuddyPress feed?

Yes. When users submit listings or post reviews in your directory, those items are displayed in BuddyPress activity streams, so other members can see new content and interact with it socially.

Does it change how users register?

New directory users are added through BuddyPress registration forms. That means your site uses a single sign-up flow, and people who join become both directory users and BuddyPress community members.

Is GeoDirectory Buddypress free?

The code of GeoDirectory Buddypress is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of GeoDirectory Buddypress is this?

Version 2.3.2, released Jun 11, 2024. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update GeoDirectory Buddypress?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of GeoDirectory Buddypress automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.

What does GeoDirectory Buddypress need?

GeoDirectory Buddypress needs GeoDirectory installed and active.
