What it does
Community and membership sites often need a way for members to talk privately without sending them off to email or an outside chat app. This extension places messaging inside the member profiles you already run. A message button on each profile opens a modal where a conversation can begin, and a dedicated messages tab collects every thread in one place for reading and replying. Conversations refresh automatically, so new replies appear without reloading the page, and email notifications let members know when a new message or conversation request arrives.
Control is split between the site owner and the members. Admins can choose which user roles can send or receive messages, cap the number of new conversations a role can start within a set timeframe, and set a maximum character count per reply. Members can turn off incoming messages, toggle email alerts, block and unblock specific people, and limit messaging to followers through follow-based integration. Small touches such as emoticons, clickable links, an online status dot and an unread count tag for menus round out the experience.
Best for
- Social networks built on the Ultimate Member plugin
- Membership sites where members need private conversations
- Forums and communities wanting on-site messaging with spam controls
Features
Adds a button to each member profile that opens a messages modal, so anyone allowed to message can start a private conversation right from the profile.
Gives every member a tab on their profile where they can view, read and reply to all of their conversations in one central location.
Conversations update on their own without a manual page reload, keeping threads current while members chat back and forth.
Sends email alerts for new messages and new conversation requests, and members can switch these notifications on or off from their account.
Admins choose which user roles can send or receive messages and can restrict how many new conversations a role starts within a set timeframe.
Members can opt out of receiving messages entirely, or block specific members and unblock them later from their account settings.
The {new_messages} tag displays the number of unread messages, which can be placed in site menus so members notice new mail.
A green dot appears next to user profiles when members are online, giving others a quick sense of who is available to chat.

Questions about Private Messages
Does this work without the Ultimate Member plugin?
No. Private Messages is an extension for Ultimate Member, and it adds its messaging features to the member profiles and account pages that Ultimate Member creates. You need an Ultimate Member powered site for it to work.
Can I stop certain members from sending messages?
Yes. Admins can set which user roles are allowed to send or receive private messages. You can also limit how many new conversations a role can start within a set timeframe, which helps keep spam and abuse in check.
Can members control who contacts them?
Members can turn off incoming private messages from their account page, block specific members and unblock them later, and use follow-based messaging so only their followers can reach them.
Will members know when they get a new message?
Yes. Members receive email alerts for new messages and conversation requests, with the option to turn those emails off. Real-time notifications flag new conversations, and the {new_messages} tag can show an unread count in your menus.
Is Private Messages free?
The code of Private Messages is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
Which version of Private Messages is this?
Version 2.4.2, released Nov 14, 2024. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.
How do I update Private Messages?
Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of Private Messages automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
