What it does
Ultimate Member gives you profiles and member directories, but members have no built-in way to mark who they know. This extension fills that gap. It places a Send Friendship Request button on profile cards in member directories and on individual profiles. The other member can then accept or reject the request. Accepted friends appear in a dedicated tab on each profile, and a second tab lists pending requests so members can sort them out in one place.
The extension also ties friendships into privacy and other Ultimate Member extensions. Members can set their profile so only friends can see it. Email notifications go out when someone receives a request or has one accepted, and the Notifications extension can show on-site alerts for the same events. With Private Messages, messaging can be limited to friends, and with Social Activity, the feed can show only friends' activity. It suits membership sites, forums and small social networks.

Members can send friend requests to each other, and the recipient can accept or reject each one, building a simple network of connections across the site.
Request buttons on profile cards

User profiles display follower and following statistics, so members and visitors can see how connected a person is within the community.

Members can choose to make their profile visible to friends only, which gives them more control over who sees their personal details.
Email alerts for requests
The extension sends email notifications when a member receives a friend request and when a request they sent has been accepted.
On-site notifications support
When used with the Ultimate Member Notifications extension, members get on-site alerts about friend request activity while they browse the site.
Friends-only messaging and activity
With the Private Messages extension, messaging can be limited to friends. With Social Activity, the activity feed can be restricted to updates from friends.

Questions about UM Friends
Does this work without Ultimate Member?
No. It is an extension for the Ultimate Member plugin and adds its friendship features to Ultimate Member profiles and member directories. You need Ultimate Member running on your site for it to work.
Can members hide their profile from people who are not their friends?
Yes. Members can restrict their profile visibility to friends only. Anyone who has not been accepted as a friend will not be able to view that profile, which helps members keep personal details within a trusted circle.
Will members know when someone sends them a friend request?
Yes. The extension sends an email when a member receives a friend request and when one of their requests is accepted. If you also use the Ultimate Member Notifications extension, members get on-site alerts for these events too.
Can I limit private messages to friends only?
Yes, if you use the Ultimate Member Private Messages extension. This extension can restrict messaging so members can only message their friends. It can also limit the Social Activity feed to friends' activity when that extension is in use.
Is UM Friends free?
The code of UM Friends is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.
