What it does

The default WordPress emoticons are limited and fairly plain, which leaves comment threads looking flat. This add-on replaces them inside wpDiscuz with its own package of smiley icons. Visitors can type familiar smile codes and see them turn into images, or click a smiley button on the comment form's bottom toolbar and pick one from a selector. Site admins can also add their own emoticons with custom codes and images.

Beyond comments, you can turn on emoticon conversion in post content, so authors can use the same icons in articles. Sites running bbPress get matching forum emoticons, with a chooser added to the topic and post editors. You can build and switch between multiple packages, switch individual emoticons on or off, and adjust the selector's background and border colors to suit your theme.

Best for

  • Blogs using wpDiscuz that want livelier comment threads
  • Community sites running bbPress forums alongside wpDiscuz
  • Site owners wanting branded custom emoticons in discussions

Features

Unique smiles package

Includes a set of specially designed emoticons that replace the plainer default WordPress smileys in your wpDiscuz comment threads.

Automatic smile code conversion

Typed smile codes in comment content are turned into the matching emoticon images, so commenters can keep using the shortcuts they already know.

Emoticon selector button

A smiley icon sits in the bottom toolbar of the comment textarea, letting users browse and insert emoticons with a click.

Custom emoticons

Admins can add their own emoticons by assigning a custom code and uploading an image, matching icons to the site's style and community.

Multiple emoticon packages

Create, manage and switch between several emoticon packages, giving you control over which set of icons your visitors see.

Per-emoticon on and off switch

Enable or disable individual emoticons so only the icons you consider suitable appear in your community's conversations.

bbPress forum support

Replaces bbPress forum post emoticons with the wpDiscuz set and adds an emoticon chooser to bbPress topic and post editors.

Selector color styling

Change the background and border colors of the emoticon selector so it fits in with the rest of your site's design.

Questions about wpDiscuz - Emoticons

Do I need wpDiscuz for this plugin to work?

Yes. This is an add-on built specifically for the wpDiscuz commenting plugin. It extends wpDiscuz comment forms with emoticons, so you need wpDiscuz running on your site to use it.

Can I add my own emoticons?

You can. Admins can add custom emoticons by giving each one a code and an image. You can also organize icons into multiple packages, switch between them and turn individual emoticons on or off.

Will emoticons work in my bbPress forums too?

Yes. The add-on replaces bbPress forum post emoticons with the wpDiscuz set and places an emoticon chooser in the bbPress topic and post editors, so forums and comments share the same icons.

Can emoticons appear in blog posts, or only in comments?

Comments are the main use, but there is an option to enable emoticon conversion in post content. With it turned on, smile codes written in your articles display as emoticon images as well.

Is wpDiscuz - Emoticons free?

The code of wpDiscuz - Emoticons is licensed under the GPL, so anyone may use, change and share it. GPL Feast is a paid service: a plan or a single purchase gives you the download and automatic updates. The developer's own support, licence key and online services are not included.

Which version of wpDiscuz - Emoticons is this?

Version 7.1.4, released Sep 21, 2025. New versions appear here when the developer publishes them, and members get them as automatic updates.

How do I update wpDiscuz - Emoticons?

Install the free GPL Feast Updater on your site and connect it with your API key. It installs new versions of wpDiscuz - Emoticons automatically and keeps a backup, so you can roll back.
